DOI: 10.1177/01454455870111008 "Hypoglycemic" AnxietyThe Role of Reinforcement in Psychophysiological DisordersCase Western Reserve University, School of Medicine
Oregon Research Institute Treatment of a case of anxiety believed to be associated with hypoglycemia is reported. The treatment involved relaxation training and changes in the contingent relationship between anxiety and eating. A reversal design was employed to demonstrate the functional relationship between anxiety and eating. Results suggest that it may be a mistake to advise patients who may be hypoglycemic to eat whenever they experience symptoms. Implications of the role of reinforcement in other psychophysiological disorders are discussed.
